It can provide a basis for self-organization and self-management, and eliminate much of the need for extrinsic controls. It is a new concept for building community--ensuring that people address the issues that really matter and remain in dialogue. It helps everyone remember that, at the most basic level, we are just people and we are connected. The Wisdom Council ensures that there is room for BIG talk. It creates a time for "just folks" around the campfire. It's a way for the wisdom, goodness, and creativity in people to emerge and help in building community.

Socio-Economic Approach to Management
SEAM International Institute is a collaboration between the University of St. Thomas and the Institute of Socio-Economic Organizations Research (ISEOR), of Lyon, France. The SEAM International Institute was established in 2013 to promote the concepts and values about organizations that are at the core of the SEAM philosophy, to foster the use of SEAM in organizations of all kinds in North America, and to educate consultants and leaders in the Socio-Economic Approach to Management (SEAM).

SEAM is based on the awareness that many organizations base their businesses on old beliefs about management that lead to inefficient and dehumanizing practices, which damage individuals, organizations and society. These beliefs lead to organizational dysfunctions, which in turn lead to hidden costs that are not measured by traditional accounting. The false beliefs about management can be transformed so that individuals and organizations are healthier and more productive, benefitting employees, owners, leaders and stakeholders. Research in over 1300 organizations has shown that the results of a SEAM intervention reduce hidden costs, increase the development of human potential, and are sustainable.

Organizational Learning

Researching Organisational Change and Learning: A Narrative Approach
This paper explores a qualitative research approach to organisational change and learning based on the gathering and reporting of stories. Particular emphasis is placed on reporting research findings in the "voices" of the organisational actors involved in the research. The paper starts by identifying learning, socialisation and diversity as a context for research and goes on to examine the power relations implicit in organisational learning. A pluralistic approach to the use of storytelling in organisational analysis is discussed and a research process is described. Issues of how research findings are represented are examined as are some unresolved and potentially unresolvable problems with narrative based research.

Understanding Organizations as Learning Systems
The authors answer questions such as: How can you tell if your company is, indeed, a learning organization? What is a learning organization anyway? And how can you improve the learning systems in your company?

Systems

Human Systems Dynamics Institute
Human Systems Dynamics (HSD) helps you see and influence patterns in human relationships. When people interact at work or play, complex patterns emerge. HSD tools help you cope with those patterns when:

  • Resources are tight and demand is high.
  • Your old tools and techniques fall short.
  • Players are many, diverse, or constantly changing.
  • Culture and/or organizational habits are obsolete.
  • Too much or too little control makes people crazy.
  • There are so many moving parts you don't know where to start.

No standard intervention works in every situation. HSD uses complexity science to open multiple options for action. It embraces your traditional approaches, offers new tools and techniques, and adds new insights into why some interventions are successful and others are not. With HSD, you view situations from a systemic level. You move beyond symptoms to address complex causal relationships for individuals, teams, organizations, and communities. You learn to use many different tools to see and influence patterns as they emerge.
